Comparing the environmental impact of energy transition technologies in a rigorous manner is a highly complex task. Results may vary depending on the life cycle stages considered, the data used, and factors such as the origin of the energy, the raw materials employed, the service life of the technology, and its end-of-life treatment. For this reason, Europe is moving from indicators focused primarily on the use phase toward common methodologies that enable technologies and value chains to be assessed using more consistent, transparent, and verifiable criteria.

The webinar will address this evolution from three perspectives: expanding the analysis beyond emissions during the use phase to include other stages of the value chain; applying harmonized methodologies, as illustrated by CountEmissionsEU in transport services; and examining the implications for industry when comparing technologies using verifiable data and supporting investment decisions.

The Fundación Repsol Chair in Energy Transition at the Technical University of Madrid is organizing this webinar to explore how life cycle assessment and methodological harmonization can contribute to more rigorous comparisons between technologies and support more robust decision-making in the context of the energy transition.
