Chair in Energy Transition on hydrogen as an energy vector: research and production

Hydrogen and key aspects in relation to production, storage, distribution and making available to the end user

Hydrogen as an energy vector is a relatively new player, a baby in the world of energy; but it is starting at great speed. In the medium to long term, hydrogen does not intend to replace all energy sources, but it aspires to occupy a niche within energy consumption alternatives. Its great value lies in its ability to replace carbon-intensive fuels in those sectors and uses that are more difficult to decarbonize, as well as its potential as an energy storage system.

Objective of the Chair

The mission of the creation of the Chair is to generate knowledge in society about the energy transition and hydrogen as a key energy vector for the decarbonisation of the economy. The Chair is structured around the following line of knowledge: "H2, as an energy vector"

Economic and energy study of the production, distribution and availability of hydrogen for mobility to the end user. Possible alternatives for the distribution of hydrogen are also studied: distribution through a network of pipelines, similar to the distribution of natural gas; distribution by road in various modalities: gaseous hydrogen at high pressure, or liquid hydrogen; or also the distribution of carriers (toluene, ammonia, methanol, e-fuel, etc.) with their consequent final conversion to hydrogen or direct use for combustion.

Finally, the energy and economic cost of the systems necessary for the provision of hydrogen to the end user, in the so-called hydrogen stations, is analysed.
