Analysis of CO2 capture and use systems

There is too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and it warms our planet. Carbon removals allow us to extract excess carbon and store it safely to restore a healthy balance in the atmosphere.

Carbon removal includes a wide range of methods, from land and forest management to other technologies and processes that require engineering development.

Objective of the Chair

This Chair aims to make relevant scientific-technical information available to society on carbon management technologies and their potential for CO₂ reduction and removal, making a comparative analysis of relevant techno-economic factors for their deployment on a large scale.

The mission of the creation of the Chair is to generate knowledge in society about the energy transition, its main objective being to promote greater knowledge about the role of the different negativeemissions technologies (NETs) and use of CO2, in a future of net zero emissions, in order to inform social opinion and acceptance more completely.

Lines of work

Capture and Negative Emission Technologies: This line focuses on disseminating technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, clearly explaining the difference between CO₂ capture and innovative processes such as direct air capture or reforestation. In addition, existing technologies are evaluated, analyzing their basic operation and degree of maturity.
CO₂ Uses and Storage: Includes the analysis of the transformation of CO₂ into products and materials, as well as the review of the current state of mineralization storage processes. The available technologies and the areas suitable for their application are also identified.
CO₂ Standards and Regulation: Addresses concepts related to the carbon regulatory framework, with a particular focus on European Union policies on carbon certification and removal.
