There is little doubt that meeting the Paris Agreement targets (that is, keeping increases in global average temperatures to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit temperature increases to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels) will involve a race against time to achieve the mass transformation of our present-day energy systems. The EU has sought to establish itself at the forefront of efforts to meet these ambitious targets. Through its Green Deal communication of December 2019, the EU Commission laid out the crucial goal of transforming the Union into an economy with no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050.
